I recently gave birth to my second son Benjamin, and only a few months later, my father-in-law passed away. I’m sure you can imagine the mix of happiness and grief I experienced — grief because of death’s sharp sting, and yet overwhelming joy at the beginning of a new life.

This got me thinking. Where does one turn for guidance and assurance in such a time as this? Many movies seem to suggest that dad is up there looking down upon us with a broad smile and a twinkling eye. Some TV shows would have me believe that through a medium, we could make contact with him. Certain Eastern traditions would suggest that he lives on in each of us and in our new son. Amongst a myriad of ideas, I have found one trustworthy answer that brings me comfort. One tried and tested rule of thumb for navigating death and the confusing bombardment of tradition and cultural ideology.

Rethink life and death and find comfort and certainty.
