When I was little, I used to love watching storms gather outside my bedroom window. First, I’d see thick, black clouds swelling on the horizon. Next, I’d notice the wind blow, whistling through the swaying trees and bringing the clouds closer and closer. Soon, the first drops of cool rain would fall and after a while, the sky would open up. Rain would pour down in sheets and thunder would crash. When I saw lightning, I knew that the storm was finally happening, and I’d sit back and watch the show.
When I turn on the news, it feels like I’m watching the beginning of another summer storm. Hunger and poverty increasing, disasters and terrorist attacks more frequent and brutal, the economy has never been on shakier ground. Just like the storm clouds I used to watch, these tragic events seem to be part of a greater escalation. What if all of this is leading up to a climax — a climax nothing like the apocalyptic scene’s you’ve seen at the movies?
